The Roundup – October 14th ⚑️

πŸ‘‹ Welcome back to The Roundup, Reader

In this issue, we're discussing the new Instagram algorithm controls and tabs layout, some trending ideas to add to your content calendar this week, and the bCreator Awards. Let's dive in...

πŸ“° In the news

What's happening in social media land this week...

Your Algorithm on Instagram

Instagram is testing a feature called "Your Algorithm" to give users more choice over what appears in their feed. Within settings, you'll see broad topic categories Instagram thinks match your interests. You can add or remove topics and preview examples of content to decide what you want more or less of.

Instagram Tabs Layout

Last week we talked about Instagram testing Reels as the default feed. Now there's another layout test underway. As announced by Mosseri, Instagram is experimenting with a new navigation menu organised around the features people use most. The update would let you swipe through Home (Stories and Feed), Reels, DMs and Search.

Tech platforms overhaul their pricing structures

Several tech tools (including ActiveCampaign, Kajabi, MailerLite, Teachable, Kit and Thinkific) have recently updated their pricing plans, either by increasing costs or reducing available features. Causing a lot of chatter and concern among small business owners and freelancers. I know many are considering switching platforms. My advice? Weigh the cost of staying against the cost of moving – including the time and effort it takes to learn a new tool or migrate your data.

Other updates

  • Instagram launch Rings, a new award to celebrate creators and creativity.
  • Meta may be forced to offer default chronological timelines, after a ruling from a Dutch court under the EU's Digital Services Act.
  • Instagram Edits continues with updates, getting new fonts and sound effects.
  • Meta adds Hindi and Portuguese to its AI translation feature for Reels.
  • YouTube rolling out public-to-members-only livestreams and a media kit PDF option (similar to what Instagram is working on) so creators can share stats with prospective brand partners.
  • YouTube working on a new editor experience for Shorts.
  • Threads experiments with Ghost Posts, which auto-delete after 24 hours.
  • LinkedIn limits competitor analysis for non-paying company pages.
  • Apple ends support for Clips, its video-editing app.

πŸ’ This week at XOmisse

🐦 I've somehow joined the 5am club… against my will. Waking between 4–5am and not being able to fall back asleep has become the norm lately.

πŸ† I attended the bCreator Awards on Thursday! It's always an incredible night celebrating the creator economy. Having previously worked as Creative Director at bCreator, it's so special to still be involved and see a project you've worked on come to life.

❀️ My mam came to visit last week, so we spent a few lovely days exploring London together.

🀧 I also picked up the cold that's been making the rounds – not ideal timing!

πŸ‘©β€πŸ’» On my desk this week: a new website build for one client, a VIP day for another, and a website + marketing strategy brief for a brand-new project.

Hope you have a lovely week!

Until next time,

Elaine XO
