The Roundup – February 14th ⚡️

👋 Welcome back Reader

And a very happy Valentines Day to you 💖

This week in The Roundup we're discussing:

→ How to utilise Social SEO on Instagram
→ Duolingo and their iconic mascot
→ Advice if you want to be a content creator

Let's dive in...

📌 Increase discoverability on Instagram with Social SEO

Are you creating great content but not reaching the right audience? Instagram SEO could be the missing piece!

Just like search engines, Instagram prioritises content based on keywords. This means strategic optimisation can help you get discovered by more new people.

I’m breaking down 5 actionable Instagram SEO tips to help you boost your visibility, improve your searchability and reach your ideal audience.

🔥 A masterclass in marketing from Duolingo

Duolingo announced the shocking news that their iconic mascot, Duo, has passed away. And the internet is obsessed as we’re all waiting to see what happens next.

Why this works so well:

1. Humour - it's unexpected, it's bold and it's super sharable.

2. Storytelling - Duo has been around for a while, being unhinged and getting into trouble. This is a dramatic twist to peek our interest and keep us hooked.

3. Engagement - Individuals, brands, celebrities are all reacting, speculating and creating content around this. Everyone's getting involved; Netflix, The World Health Organisation, The Empire State Building, Dua Lipa... the list goes on!

Plus, it's so on brand for Duolingo!

Speaking of, earlier this week they shared their company handbook which details their 5 principle approach to this "wholesome and unhinged" marketing style.

📰 In the news

💭 From my desk

I was chatting to someone new recently (okay, it was a date) and naturally, we got onto the topic of work...

"I've been thinking about creating fitness content to document my journey but I'm a private person so I'm worried about what people might think and I don't know how to grow it into something bigger", he said.

Now, you know this set my brain off. Advice poured out of me as we dove deeper into the conversation. So much so that he jokingly told me to send him an invoice and be his manager. (New business idea maybe?! LOL)

The reason I'm sharing this is because I know that SO MANY PEOPLE think this way too. I've heard some version of this story a thousand times.

Damn, I've been there myself WAYYY back in 2009 when it wasn't as mainstream.

So in case you need it this week, here's the gist of my advice:

  • Start a new account and block anyone you don't want seeing it. This won't prevent them from ever finding your content but hopefully it will give you the confidence to start and get the ball rolling.
  • Don't overthink it, just start. Otherwise a year from now you'll be still wondering if you should do it.
  • In my experience, the people who have negative opinions about what you're doing are jealous because they wish they could put themselves out there like you are.
  • Those people with negative opinions, they don't pay your bills baby! They will have their opinions about you whether you do the thing or not. So you might as well do whatever makes you happy.
  • People only find it "cringe" until they see you as successful. Then they will be sliding into your DMs asking for advice on how to do the same.

So, go do the thing – I believe in you!

If you're already in your creator/business owner journey, what advice would you give someone starting out?

Until next time,
Elaine XO
